Our Full Findings About H1 Tags

If you haven’t already heard, there’s been a lot of talk recently about the massive core update Google rolled in April and how it is causing major fluctuations in search engine results. One of the biggest questions circulating among search engine optimization (SEO) professionals is if H1 tags still play a major role in search engine rankings.

Being that H1 tags have long been the backbone of SEO activities, we thought it best to test these tags ourselves and put the debate about their relevance to rest once and for all.

What Happened With Google?

The update to Google’s core system focused on the ever-growing problem of spam and the deteriorating quality of the search engine results delivered to users. Google’s priority is to improve the user experience by returning the most meaningful results possible. This means that it wants to eliminate rankings of content that has been purposely manipulated solely to improve SEO rankings.

Anyone using low-quality content for their website probably saw their online presence slide. There were also a number of reputable sites that reported plummeting rankings, but this may have been a temporary phenomena.

Because High Voltage is committed to using data-driven SEO strategies, our clients had the opposite experience–their websites came out performing stronger than ever.

Despite this success, we didn’t just open the champagne bottles and celebrate. To ensure that High Voltage is always delivering solutions that meet and exceed our clients’ expectations, we turned our attention to our old friend: the H1 tag.

Methodically Exploring the Importance of H1 Tags

H1 tags help search engines understand and find content on websites. A team at High Voltage adopted a scientific approach and developed tests to explore just how well these tags were accomplishing this goal in today’s digital environment.

First, our team created five pages with the same keywords on a test website. Keywords were added to the paragraph tag, and simultaneously, the H1 tag was removed from all five pages. All five pages were submitted for indexing.

A targeted search returned results for the website stripped of H1 tags. Next, one keyword was added inside the H1 tag on the lowest-ranking page and one keyword was added inside the paragraph tag on three other pages.

What happened? The page with the H1 tag moved to the number one position. These results were impressive and proved that H1 tags are still a significant ranking factor!

Why H1 Tags Are Important for Your Website

Our tests reaffirmed what we believed was still true: H1 tags are essential to SEO. By incorporating precise themes into the H1 tags across several test pages, we observed a clear boost in search rankings for those pages.

For any website, the more descriptive these tags are, the easier it is for people to find what they are looking for. The more straightforward it is for users to get the search results they want, the happier they are. This is exactly what Google is striving for and why it is focusing so much attention on improving the user experience.

Always Looking Out for Your Interests

Our recent tests confirm that H1 tags are an indispensable tool for boosting online visibility. Rather than being obsolete, as some claimed, they are still powerful drivers of the SEO machine.

High Voltage only uses white hat SEO tactics that work. We are keenly aware of Google algorithm changes that could impact traffic, conversions, and revenues of brands and businesses that rely on.

By working closely with High Voltage, our clients have seen a remarkable uptick in visits to their websites. Their keywords continue to climb to the top tiers of search charts, putting them front and center in their industry.
