Is your business a good fit for SEO?

The truth is, not all businesses are a great fit for SEO.

The most common reason is because SEO is a long-term game and it won't alleviate bleeding neck problems within a business.

If your leads have dried up, you’re not making sales, and you’re not sure if you’ll be able to make payroll at the end of the month, now is NOT the time to be starting SEO, it was a year or so ago.

Our senior SEO strategist Adam Truszkowski, has been involved in the world of SEO for more than a decade and has now interviewed more than 400 companies while working at High Voltage.

Adam offered us some insights into what businesses are best suited for SEO, the proper mindset to have, and how running an SEO campaign compares to other marketing channels.

What kind of business is a good fit for doing SEO?

The businesses that make the best fit for SEO all have one thing in common:

The individuals behind them have a long-term, growth mindset.

SEO doesn’t work miracles, so it shouldn't be seen as a remedy to problems that fall outside its scope.

Websites and online products with low conversion rates won’t suddenly improve their conversion rates through driving SEO traffic.

Websites and brands tht already have some online success and are looking to amplify this usually make the strongest candidates for SEO.

Also, working with an SEO team needs a reasonable investment over a minimum period of 6 months. So you’ll need to budget for this.

If you don’t have the budget to work with an SEO agency, there are tools and courses available that allow you to learn and implement the basics yourself. Consider our training platform and our On-Page SEO tool if you are in this category.

Developing the proper mindset for SEO

SEO is a marathon, not a sprint.

A proper SEO campaign sets you up for success in the long run.

Potential clients sometimes come to us wanting to rank in the top positions overnight.

But this isn’t a realistic possibility, at least not without the use of some underhanded (Black Hat) techniques, which are never a long-term solution and usually do not end well.

You have to think of your website as an asset of your business, the same as physical real estate you invest in. Unlike paid ads, good SEO will increase the value of this asset over time.

How does SEO compare with other marketing channels?

“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second-best time is now.”

The same is true for SEO.

Most businesses would benefit from starting their SEO as soon as they begin, but for those that haven’t, the best time to start is now.

Because when you run an SEO campaign, you plant the seeds for your future growth, and once those seeds have produced fruit, they’ll give you results forever.

That’s the major difference between SEO and other marketing strategies, like Pay-Per-Click (PPC) and other types of ads.

The moment you stop paying for them or running the campaign, you no longer get results. You have to continually give to get.

But with SEO, you front-load the work and as your business grows, so does your positioning in the search results.

Organic traffic comes to you through natural search results, which means it's available 24/7, forever, as long as your site is live. Paid traffic dries up the moment you stop paying.

Ideally, your business is generating traffic and leads through a variety of channels that are all working symbiotically together.

SEO is helping you to grow your email list, you keep your leads warm through regular email campaigns. You run Retargeting to bring unconverted traffic back into your funnel. You supplement when you need to with paid traffic campaigns and you have a healthy balance of diverse traffic.

Ask yourself: What kind of actions can you take today that will positively impact your business in a year, three, or even ten years from now?

So are you ready to move forward with a custom SEO strategy?
